What to expect, what to wear, whether it hurts, and the one thing massage can't do on its own.
If you've never had one, sports massage has a bit of a reputation. Here's what it's actually like.
The idea that deeper is better is one of the more persistent myths in this area. Pressure should be firm enough to do something and comfortable enough that you aren't bracing against it.
If you're holding your breath and gripping the table, the muscle is tensing rather than releasing, which rather defeats the point. Say something. We would far rather adjust than have you endure it politely.
Despite the name, most of the people we see for sports massage aren't training for anything. Desk workers, gardeners, people on their feet all day and people who just carry a lot of tension in their shoulders.
What you've trained, what you've lifted, how you've slept and where you're feeling it all change what we do. A ten minute conversation at the start makes the hour that follows considerably more useful.
Some people feel wonderful straight away. Others feel a little tender for a day, similar to the day after a decent gym session. Both are normal.
Drink some water, move around gently, and don't book your heaviest training session for the following morning if you can avoid it.
Massage is very good at what it does. It helps tissue feel better, it eases tension and it makes movement more comfortable for a while.
What it doesn't do is build capacity. If the same area keeps tightening up every few weeks, the massage is managing a symptom and something else needs to change. We'll tell you if we think that's what's happening.
Wear or bring shorts and a vest top. Sessions run 55 or 90 minutes. Let us know about any medical conditions, medication or recent injuries when you book.
Give us a call and we will talk you through what we think is best for your recovery.
Perhaps you've been here before. A long wait that went nowhere, or a sheet of exercises and no real plan. If you're unsure whether we're the right fit, you don't have to book anything to find out.
Tell us what's going on and we'll come back to you honestly and let you know how we can help.
