Tennis & golfer's elbow treatment in Balsall Common

Pain lifting the kettle, gripping the shopping, or every time you play.

It started with something small. A weekend of decorating, a new racket, a heavier gym programme. Now you feel it lifting the kettle.

You've swapped hands for the shopping. You've stopped playing, or you're playing through it and paying for it the next day. There's a point where you realise you're avoiding shaking hands with people, which is a strange thing to have to think about.

Elbow pain is one of those problems people put up with for months, largely because it seems too minor to book an appointment for.

Understanding elbow pain

Tennis elbow and golfer's elbow are tendon problems. The tendons that attach your forearm muscles to the elbow have been asked to do more than they can currently handle, and they have become sensitive as a result.

Despite the names, most people who get them have never picked up a racket or a golf club. Decorating, gardening, gripping tools and desk work all load the same tissue.

They can be stubborn, and they respond well to the right loading. What they don't respond to is rest, which is unfortunately what most people try first.

The common causes of elbow pain

  • Tennis elbow. Pain on the outside of the elbow, worse gripping, lifting a kettle or shaking hands.
  • Golfer's elbow. The same idea on the inside of the elbow, often with gripping and wrist flexion.
  • A sudden increase in load. A weekend of DIY, a new job, a change in racket or grip, or a new gym programme.
  • Weakness through the shoulder and upper back, which leaves the forearm doing more than its share.
  • Referred pain from the neck, which is worth ruling out when the picture doesn't quite fit.

Stopping it coming back

  • Build grip and forearm strength deliberately rather than hoping it settles.
  • Increase DIY, racket sport or gym volume gradually.
  • Check your grip size and technique if you play a racket sport.
  • Keep the shoulder and upper back strong, because the forearm pays for weakness higher up.
  • Deal with it early. Elbow tendons are far easier to settle in month one than month nine.
