Desk related pain treatment in Balsall Common

Fine in the morning, aching by three, and worse on the days the diary is back to back.

You were fine at nine. By three your shoulders are somewhere near your ears, your lower back is aching against the chair and you've started shifting position every couple of minutes without noticing.

You've bought the chair. You've bought the standing desk, and you use it for about twenty minutes a day. You've watched the videos about sitting up straight and it lasts until the next email.

This is one of the most common things we see, and it responds better than most people expect.

Understanding desk related pain

Here's the honest version. Sitting up straight is not the answer, and the research linking particular postures to pain is much weaker than the internet suggests.

What actually causes the problem is staying in any one position for hours. Tissue gets uncomfortable when it's held still. Muscles that hold you up all day get tired, and tired muscles ache. Add a stressful week and everything gets more sensitive.

So the best posture really is the next one. What helps is moving more often and having enough strength that holding yourself up isn't near your limit.

What actually causes it

  • Sustained positions rather than bad ones. The issue is usually how long, not how you sat.
  • A laptop only setup with the screen well below eye height.
  • Back to back meetings with no natural break to get up and move.
  • Reduced strength through the neck, upper back and hips, which is very common in desk based work.
  • A stressful period at work, which raises muscle tension and lowers your tolerance for all of it.

Getting through a busy week

  • Get up every half hour or so. This is the single most effective thing on this list.
  • Raise your laptop to eye height and use a separate keyboard and mouse.
  • Build general strength. It raises your tolerance for sitting more than any chair will.
  • Walk at lunchtime, even a short one. It breaks the day up in a way your body notices.
  • Watch the weeks when the diary is worst, because that's usually when symptoms build.
